Or employers....
I had a job with Tesco, 16 hours a week. I didn't earn enough to be paying National Insurance, but because I was 16 hours, I wasn't allowed to"sign on" to have it paid. Tesco refused to cut even 1 hour, and once I took into account petrol etc (had to use car because of living semi-rural and starting work at 06:30, there were no buses) I was actually better off giving up work and signing on! I got contribution based JSA until I found another job. Once I showed the Job Centre the calculation, I wasn't sanctioned for leaving a job0 -
Your employer should not be saying things such as "first in - last out". That selection criteria is a dodgy one now due to age discrimination legislation.
Your contract, technically, should only say somehting like "during peak trade periods, you may be required to work more hours" however, they cannot force someone to work more hours,they can only remind you of your contractual obligations on this point. It is fair to say though that when you take up ANY part time job, you will be asked to work more hours and to be seen as a team player it is in your best interest to take up hours every now and then.
However, I agree, a month off during your probationary period is excessive and if I were your manager or the HR rep on your case would look to extend or end your probationary period due to this.0
