Credit agency chasing a previous owner of our house

Hi all,

we bought this house in July and over the last month have been receiving letters from Apex Credit Management. It is not for the previous owner of the house but we think the name is the owner previous to that. He would have been here till 2007 as that was when the house was last sold.

Till now I have marked all letters "not known return to sender" but they just keep coming. Is it best if I phone this company and explain?

Also are there any steps I should take to make sure that our credit files are not linked to this person?

Thanks for any help,

    Hi

Your credit files won't be linked to them - as files are individual to a person not an address. The only way you can be financially linked is if you have a joint credit agreement with someone else (or make joint applications for credit).

Just keep returning them, its annoying but I wouldn't bother entering into any calls with them (they might say on the phone they'll remove the address but the letters will keep coming).

Thanks for your help Tixy. I am a little concerned someone might turn up on the doorstep looking for him. Is this likely to happen?
  • I would just call the company and explain the situation. They might send you a form to fill in confirming you are NOT the person they are looking for, but that should be all, if anything.

    So what if they do?

You tell them you're not him. If they harass you or force entry, you call the police. They won't have a leg to stand on if you're not the person they're looking for.
  • Surely if a letter comes for someone who does not live at the house, you just return it unopened

How do you know what the letter says?

Fair comment, I am making assumptions from the name of the sender on the back of the envelope! Will keep returning them and hope they get the message.

No-one ever came to our house. The previous owners got reposessed and had loads of different debts.

Every now and again letters came - I returned to sender. I rang the High Court Baliffs and did send them proof we were not Mr & Mrs Spend It All And Run, as he said they would come round and possibly get into our house when we were away.

I knew a lot less in those days!

I hope our experience is some reassurance - oh, and the debt definitely doesn't affect your credit record as it isn't a person you are financially linked to.

Oh, by the way I took to writing on the envelopes little messages like "moved away years ago, never met them", just to help make the point, as I thought maybe they might get noticed more than just RTS not known.
