    Read through your code of practice.

    You must report discrimination and exploitative behaviour (3.2)

    Bring to your employers attention (or appropriate authority) operational difficulties which may impinge on the delivery of safe care (3.4)

    Following your contact to the commission, don't be surprised if your manager summons you for a chat about the complaint (i've seen it happen and it left the complainant distraught) - were you absolutely anonymous?

  • you MUST ensure if you are using a hoist you do not do this alone, hoisting must be done with 2 people present throughout the procedure, patients have died being hoisted by one person so this is an absolute must.

    I am also concerned that nursing homes are still getting residents up during the night shift in the early hours of the morning, I thought this practice died a death years ago, fair enough if residents want to get up early, that's fine, but if residents are being made to get up to relieve the pressure on the day staff then this is an absolute disgrace, breaches patient dignity and needs stopping.

    Does the manageress own the home? If not and it's part of a large organisation then she may not have any say over staffing levels and may be more sympathetic than you think. From what you say your staffing levels seem low, putting both staff and residents at risk, but unfortunately its the same in most nursing homes. The home does however have an obligation to meet the needs of the residents but that's all rather woolly and it's not always easy to prove they're not receiving that care. I wish you luck. Care of the elderly is desperately underfunded and frighteningly expensive to provide.

    And to the other poster, I can assure you clients are still dragged out of bed in the early hours to make it easier for day staff.
