Application forms
OhYeah
Hi everyone
I'm currently applying for jobs. I have been in my post for only 8 weeks.
I am applying for management posts and wanted to ask advice on what I should put on the application form as to why I want to leave my current post after such a short time. I explained at interview that I wanted to progress into management but since being in post found out that staff turnover is extremely high, morale is very low, and movement to management level is highly unlikely.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

were in work before you took this job on you were you unemployed? If unemployed you could say you took the 1st thing you were offered but am still looking for the right role for you.0

Just put 'career progression' or 'to make use of my skills'. I don't recommend saying that you took the first thing you could; you never know who will see the application, and putting down your current role isn't a great idea!' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0

Obviously I'm not sure of the details but it sounds like you're trying to move from one role to a similar role in a different company, can you not just put something like "want to work for Company x" and then at interview mention about how you weren't actively looking for a new job, you just happened to notice they were recruiting and had wanted to work there.0
-
What were you doing immediately before taking this role? Were you employed? Were you similar level as your current job previously or a "manager"?
Ultimately after a short time you can possibly get away with saying that the role simply isnt what you thought it would be and probably get away with it assuming your not a serial job switcher. More difficult to explain will be the fact that circa 10 weeks ago you thought you were fit for non-manager grades and now after being in a job that hasnt worked out you are now saying you are ready for managerial posts.0 -
I would put something like:
'Company not offering the expected management training opportunities', as long as you can say something clear and specific (not just have a general whinge) if they ask you about it at interview.
In your existing postion, though, if staff turn-over is high, aren't the opportunities for advancement greater than usual?
Or perhaps you only want to manage in easy situations, not difficult ones? Management can be very tough!0 -
I was unemployed and raising family prior to taking post. I am refreshing my qualifications by doing an OU degree. Staff turnover is high at a non-managerial level. It's so bad I have seen new staff stay for a day and simply not return. I have witnessed management frog marching staff off the premises simply because they did not want to do over time. There is constant swearing in the office and some of it is racially motivated.
I have taken your comments on board and will use some on future applications.0 -
I reckon they'll give you the job the day they get the application. What skills and experience can you offer us?:
I'm a great bully, practiced in the art since the school playground, I can shout very loudly and upset the hardest members of staff and if that doesn't work I'll start swearing and throwing things. Additionally I'm more than happy to put half the workforce on disciplinary action and threaten to sack at least 2 a month whilst playing half the workforce against the other half. Further to increase profitability I only hire temp staff on the NMW and refuse to give them any more than a half hour lunch break per day. Whilst they work here I feed them false promises of permanent work and then give them the chop before the company has any legal responsibility to them.
In the mean time where is your current company and any chance they've got any work? - I've been in !!!!!! jobs before and lasted them for years so I doubt this one will throw anything new at me.0 -

Believe me they will. I have done some jobs before but this one takes the P. There is no such thing as H&S. Some staff work with substances with no training, protective clothing etc. The public image is somewhat different to what really goes on.0 -

Don't wait for some one to become injured or worse, do something to raise awareness or if you feel unable to act report the situation by informing the HSE...
