Jobseeker allowance - first no, then yes

After having applied I have received a letter stating "We can pay you jobseeker allowance from the 10 of nov". The letter only tells me the amount but doesn't say if I have to do anything myself, nor from when they are going to pay it.

What happens now? Do I need to get in touch with them?

Also, I was frankly baffled to have received a positive response, as I had applied before (I haven't had a full time paid job - nor part time- since the beginning of the year) in march, but they'd refused to pay me the allowance.

How does this make sense? What changed?

They are really confusing me here.. :(

Didn't you get invited to an interview at the job centre with an advisor before being told you were going to receive JSA? It is at that meeting that you would be told when to sign on etc.

Well, that depends on what reason they gave you when you were refused.

They didn't invite me to a meeting. I have only received the letter. And the first time they refused me the JSA, they said it was on the grounds that I hadn't paid enough tax last year (when I was working part time and studying)

When you next sign on then you should normally get your JSA payment three banking days later. I presume you are signing on fortnightly?

  • It sounds like some confusion over your contribution status. It will get sorted and back dated, So just carry on signing on your dates and remind the advisor you see each time, to find out your situation. But it sounds like you are in the system and thats a good thing. The next time you sign, just ask.
