We've got a couple of jars of coins: one coppers and one silver. I'm reluctant to give away any of it to machines. Would a bank give me a pile of those plastic bags they use?

Yes they will. Done it loads of times.
Funniest thing is if you have quite a bit and it takes a while, everyone else in queue getting frustrated!0 -

My bank has no problem in giving loads of these bags, last time I went in with £95 of silver and the woman gave me a huge roll of bags. I now have £30 of coppers bagged up. I love going into the bank with them, i really love the looks people give. I have no shame!!!!LBM - August 2008 - Debts then - £33390 - 2nd LBM - November 2009 - Debts then - £18500:mad:

Hi,
Some branches will only let you exchange 5 bags a day to minimise queueing, while others will take the whole lot. Just best to be prepared if you're lugging tons in and maybe ask them first.
I think some branches of RBS (maybe others) also have coinstar type machines where you can just tip the money in but without any commission being lobbed off.
And finally, you can use the self service supermarket tills to use lots and lots of the coins to pay for your shopping and again zero commission.
