How long should the mortgage process take? Any experience of using Skipton?

We accepted an offer from some time wasters back in July who messed us about no end until eventually I put the house back on the market as I was convinced they could not proceed.

As luck would have it on the same day the estate agent confirmed these people could not proceed we had an offer from another couple. :)

Anyway... We are over 3 months down the line with buying somewhere, everything is in place, the buyers are able to re use the previous buyers info as much as possible. All that is needed is their mortgage. We really need to complete by 15th December at the latest. Apparently the couple saw the mortgage advisor yesterday but im yet to have a call booking the survey. Based on experience, if they were using the Nationwide id of had the survey booked yesterday for this week. I think they are using the Skipton, & I have no knowledge of how fast they operate.

Is my date at all possible, or should I resign myself to the fact im not moving till the new year, which throws up all sorts of issues?

  • Anyone please?
  • Highly unlikely they'd be able to exchange, never mind complete within three weeks from this stage, and from that point you have the christmas break (conveyancers like a nice long break over christmas) which means well into the New Year - have their conveyancers even done the searches yet?
  • I bought my first flat in Scotland in March and my mortgage is with Skipton. The sellers were looking for a quick sale and as a first time buyer the only thing I needed to do was get my mortgage in place (ie. I didn't have anywhere to sell). Thanks to a fantastic financial advisor, and great communication from Skipton, I was able to complete very quickly. My offer was accepted by the sellers on 2nd March, and I got the keys on 25th March so it's definitely possible. Good luck!
  • Under three weeks is extremely rare with financing involved - if everything was in place and people were hassling people every day on the phone, it might be possible, but the time of year makes it even more unlikely, unfortunately. The system as it is just doesn't work well in december unfortunately!
