Kids need to realise that there are things in life that aren't "fair" and you HAVE to do things you don't want to sometimes. What lesson are you teaching them for the future? If the parent isn't really bothered about attendance how on earth do you expect the children to be?
Pretending they are ill to get out of school is different though as you know they may miss important lessons if they are not there.
As I said, last time my eldest went in and spent all but one lesson sitting in the common room with nothing to do and he was bored to tears. At least if he was at home, I'd make sure he was doing something useful or take him somewhere interesting. It's not a case of instilling bad ethics as my children want to learn rather than sit bored all day.
Both schools are closing this time though, so I'll have them all at home anyway. Here I go again on my own....0 -

I very much doubt a school would tell parents to keep their other child at home if one was ill either!
Some schools have said that for the strike though, which indicates it won't be a normal working day.0 -

As to what I'd do with the original post, depends on age of kids, what they were doing and why eg if it's great Aunt Ethel's 90th birthday party and it means you and your 4 yo can attend but then you're cutting it by a hair's whisker to get to school for 3.30pm to pick up your 6yo due to the bus route between nursing home and school then I'd be tempted to take eldest out, if it's a teenager sulking cos you've told his 5yo brother you'll take him to see santa and he's playing the 'it's not fair' card i'd be ignoring.0 -
Keep the children off and have a lovely day together!
I am a teacher and I will be on strike myself next Wednesday. I am planning a lovely day with my own children. This is a really tiring half term and a day off will do me and them a world of good, and help them keep going until the end of term.
If the school complains, tell them that you are concerned about their pensions and you are supporting the national action.

So as Debbie says it's a bit of a jolly this strike malarkey, if teachers are planning a fun day off then why are parents even bothered if they are doing the right thing?Snootchie Bootchies!0

We are friends so I guess she is more lax with me than other parents!
Anyhow, they came home with another letter today stating yr 5 now are not to go in as they are closing the entire school.0 -

Can I just point out that although some teachers are planning a fun day off, it's our prerogative as we're losing a day's pay? Quite an expensive fun day, I'd say...although as someone said upthread, we are very lucky to have the right to be in a union and to be able to choose to take industrial action.

Wouldnt quite say its your perogative, the majority of folk who just take days off (even if it is un-paid)for a jolly, usually find themselfs struggling to hold onto their job!!!0 -
DD's school is closed. Kind of cancels out the school's complaint that I have been taking her for medical treatment at the expense of her education 'because every session is vital'.
Where there will be schools/classes open, they'll get TAs to babysit - before you know it, TAs will be able to get QTS on the basis of their experience in the classroom. Kind of like the old pupil teachers model. Then it's an easy step to one degree educated teacher for 100 children and 2 ex TAs.
There isn't the sympathy for strike action/unions that there was in Thatcher's era. The 'You're all in it together - up to your necks' brigade have guaranteed that. So, whilst teachers have perfectly valid complaints, they're going to be portrayed and viewed as no different from benefit claimants.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Both of my kids have had letters now saying that their schools will be closed. As we were informed at half term that an extra holiday day we had to take in term time was 'unauthorised absence', I do feel like sending a letter in stating that we will make arrangements to keep our children at home for the day but we are viewing it as 'unauthorised home leave'.
Ooooh, when I'm in charge of the water cannon, things will be different...............:eek:0
