Consultation period....

How long should a consultation period be?

My FTC is ending sooner than planned due to there not being as much work as anticipated (the actual role is being made redundant but obviously they have to keep a job 'open' as person is on maternity leave - they have been informed already that this job is redundant).

I was told that they would look at other roles within the company during the consultation period but after one week they have said they haven't been able to find anything suitable and so contract will end earlier on xx date.

Now my question is, should the consultation period and looking at alternative roles be for the duration of the notice?
I have not had anything from HR about any upcoming roles and we have not discussed what I would be interested in, even though this is in the letter!

They have said I can appeal it but as I can't argue that there is work to do, there really isn't any point in doing so.

  • It seems that there is only one post at risk of redundancy, and therefore there is no specific timescale. It has to be reasonable and that can be as little as a week - small company not likely to have much in the way of redeployment for example.

Yes, during notice they should still be looking for alternative employment and keeping you informed of any opportunities.

Other points to remember - if you have less than one year service you have little comeback anyway.

Check the terms of your notice.
