I got a call from HMRC today on a private number at about 1 o clock. I was driving so couldn't take the call and they said they would call back. They did ask me about my postcode but i didn't tell them. I haven't had any letters from them so am wondering why they would call me out of the blue. They also mentioned they were calling from croydon, I checked online and there is a HMRC office in croydon.

However I am wondering do HMRC ever call you on a private number? I''ve heard about scams like this so am just wondering.

thanks for replies.

They would call you on whatever number they have. If, by 'private' you mean ex directory or unlisted mobile - have you completed an SA Return and provided a number on the designatory data?

I meant they withheld their number. I'm sorry I didn't mean on my private number but I mean they withheld their number.

Do government departments withhold their numbers or something like that?

Yes - as virtually all call centres / large organisations do. Imagine everyone who had a missed call ringing back and saying 'you rang me?'. With 40k staff - spread all over the UK - and most taxpayers not knowing a reference .... it just doesn't work.

Yep all calls made BY HMRC will appear as "Withheld number" when they call, they should leave a voicemail message giving all of their contact details (inc direct line) for you to call back.

Have you been in contact with HMRC yourself recently? They could be calling you back with regard to any query you have had.#

Have you recently asked the Tax Credit Office for an application form? If so they sometimes send the details through to the local HMRC Enquiry Centre to issue the form but they have to call you beforehand to confirm your address (only) before they post it out.

    All HMRC numbers are withheld.
