Tons of debt, tried everything now stuck and homeless

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone's got any potent advice on how to clear large amounts of debt - I've got two bank accounts, each one is overdrawn by £1,000 and personal debt that totals more than £10,000.

I now can't get a credit card for basic shopping needs like cider. I have a low grade Vanquis credit card with a £150 limit that is maxed out to £198, and my mastercard was cancelled around a month ago. I have no idea what happened to the debt from the master card as I am currently not living at the address that the card was registered to.

I've tried all of the conventional routes - debt counselling and debt advice, bank advice, C.A.B. and I haven't been able to get anywhere. I was robbed by loan sharks for £100 a few months ago trying to get a debt consolidation loan, I think the company was called no worries loans and they refused to give me a refund. The Financial Services Ombudsman were no help in dealing with NWL.

I've also lost god knows how much in bank fees and bank charges. Probably a few thousand, I'm afraid to look because it will just make me depressed.

I'm at the moment hiding with friends in the hope that my creditors will not find me. I can't put down a deposit on an individual room and will have to move at some point, but don't have anything to move with.

Appreciating any advice that you may have!

Hi,and welcome.I am no financial expert so cant offer to help other than show you some support.I am sure someone will be along soon that can advise you.In the meantime have you done an SOA showing your income/outgoings etc as most helpers would be able to give better advice if they have this info .

I suggest you put up an SOA so that the helpful people on this board can pick it apart and see where you can make savings day to day. I do hope however, that the comment in red above was a joke!!!

What do you mean by you haven't been able to get anywhere? What did the CAB say? What about the debt counsellors and the others you mention?

Hmmm...can you give us some idea of how this happened? It can't have been overnight. My suspicion from one of your comments is that you might be better served by professional councillors rather than debt management at the moment.

You can address your debts when you get your accommodation sorted out, and all the associated benefits.

Is there a local homeless charity that could help you?
  • I was also taken aback by cider being classed as 'basic shopping need'.
