Hi All
I'm 25 and want to train as a hairdresser. Unfortunately I can't afford the college course - 1 is £650 the other is £850!
Can anyone think of other ways that I can go about it?
Thanks

Career development loan? There are also various grants and trusts available to individuals for education which can be accessed via a package called funderfinder PIN.This can be accessed via your local Voluntary Action. Many of them require a referral though via a service/keyworker like a mental health service or social services etc.0

Thanks for the advice.
I've just found out that my friend has a qualification that means he can teach me hairdressing. He just can't put me in for my exam. I just have to find that one out! Means it works out cheaper than going to college and can fit around my work!DEBT TOTAL: £7609.440 -
Some lot are advertising on the radio at the moment. They keep on going on about their brilliant "Tester Course" which sounds rather dodgy when said quickly.0

I just need to find somewhere that I can pay to do the exam. My friend has the teaching qualification but didn't do the final bit where he could put his students through their exams.
So I can learn how to cut hair etc but need to get the certificate after to say I'm qualified. I just can't find anywhere that does it!DEBT TOTAL: £7609.440 -
Most colleges will not accept you to do the exam without you having trained there. the main reason is that they have no control over your training but the result will affect their success rates. When you say being trained around work, are you working around hairdressing?
You could look to do an apprenticeship.
The teaching qualification your friend has is not really relevant, more relevant is that you follow the standards withing the hairdressing qualification (whichever you choose). What prior qualifications do you have?0 -
The hairdressing qualification will be NVQ which will won't be assessed by an exam but continuously by an assessor.
Whose heads are you going to practice on for the practical work?0 -
Do you have an NVQ in anything else? Some colleges will provide funding (apart from exam or equipment, but they can sometimes be funded seperately) for your first NVQ qualification. Speak to their learning/finance dept for info.
I did this when I learned Beauty Therapy a few years ago.0 -
^^ Exaclty, not down to individual colleges but in fact a rule from the Skills Funding Agency;
19+ (no upper age limit) then 1st full level 2 qualification (e.g. NVQ2) is free
19-24 then 1st full level 3 qualification (e.g. NVQ3) is free
19+ (no upper age limit) then 1st full level 3 qualification (e.g. NVQ3) is free if missing the level 2 (called a jumper, straight to Level 3)
these are all self certified by the learner.0
