How to become an IFA?

Hi everyone
Iam currently thinking about a career change and becoming an IFA. I have discovered that I am really into it and would like to become a financial advisor.
Im finding it hard to get started in the industry and was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best route to becoming an IFA?
I know that you need to have qualifications to become an IFA. Would it be best to start in an administration role working for an IFA firm and work up to advisor level?
My background is in property and accountancy.
Many thanks.
