Childcare costs for striking teachers

Hi,

I'm hoping the very helpful and knowledgeable people on here would be able to help regarding the teachers strike and costs of childcare.

OK a little background, I'm a single mum of three, and I work part time in a temporary position (lost my permanent job a few months back and took it as a fill in until I find somewhere else). I have also arranged a DMP (Mainly thanks to trolling this board lol) and just about get by.

So next week I have the option, I can either play the emergency childcare card with work and have a days unpaid leave or pay for a sitter (with three kids this is cheaper than a nursery or centre)

What else?

I have read and applied for the childcare post on this site.
My children are all under 10.
I'm also asking around to see if anyone will have time off/ would be able to cover but no luck yet.

OK enough about me, here's my query, It looks like as I have said Im either gonna loose a days pay or have to pay for the extra childcare, either way Im out of pocket and already on a tight budget (and just before christmas aswell) will make things really hard, Is there anyway I can claim the costs back, either from the union striking or other parties.

The way I see it I am being put out financially and am just a "innocent" third party, yes I appreciate I would have to cover for for illnesses etc, but another way to look at it as I see it would be like a car.

Yes I have a spare and contingency in case of a blow out and if happens I will pay for the repair, However, If you come along and stab a spike into it, I would either expect you to pay or if you refused would take you to court (OK maybe not for a tyre but hopefully you get my point lol)

Any advise would be eternally thankfull even if its a tough luck theres nowt you can do lol.

Thanks in advance.

Your post is a little garbled, to be honest. Are you referring to the strike on 30th? I thought that striking was optional - or is your school closed? If so, there is nothing you can do and you'll just have to suck it up, I'm afraid. No one will make up your salary.

And good luck with te car thing too. Speaking as someone who recently had a rock put through my new car, you have no chance of the police detecting who did it, and when you identify the person yourself to the police through CCTV footage you have no chance of a prosecution and even less chance of suing said b****d who has no money other than benefits anyway. You have more chance of winning the lottery.

My school is closed to pupils, but the teachers and staff not striking are still in, they then dont loose any pay, they can choose to take the day off if they wish, but obviously wont get paid. Hope that is some help,

It would cost me more to prosecute than it is worth. I am considering talking to some of my less savoury contacts...:(

OP, are you saying that you have to arrange childcare for your children as they won't be in school due to the strikes or do you actually work in a school?

I read the OP as having a problem with childcare because her childrens' teachers were on strike and the school closed, not because she was a teacher herself. Seems a clear case of emergency childcare problems, so she could claim a day off - up to the employer whether or not they pay.

I don't think you will be covered for Emergency Dependant Leave, because it's not unforseen, and it's over a week away. Are there no other Mums who can take your children for the day in return for a Saturday Christmas shopping this week or next week?

Agree with liney.. I don't have children but we had an email round at work saying that people with children will not be granted emergency leave as they have plenty of notice to arrange child care so you will probably have to go with the babysitter.
