Reclaiming tax overpayment for year 2010/11

Hello fellow MSErs,

I'm pretty sure I'm eligible to get some of my tax back as I was on BR code for the duration of tax year 2010/2011. From what I heard I have to send HMRC my P45, P60 for that year and covering letter explaining what am I claiming for. Snag is I still didn't get P45 from my last employer (I left my last job in September, currently a student, but getting another job soon, hopefully) and am wondering why would they actually need P45 at all as all the information they need is on P60? Is it really necessery to send them P45 in case you're not claiming the tax from the current tax year?

Cheers,

You don't need to send HMRC any tax documents for 2010/11. Just tell them why you think you are due a refund and they'll tell you if they need any supporting documents.

Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place
  • Thanks, read that before and it's got it even more complicated because I'm currently unemployed so the site says that I should fill yet another form (P50) and send it along P45. On the contrary, a lady at HRMC said I need to send them a letter, P45 and P60. But I don't have P45 at the moment and was wondering if P60 alone would do as all info for reclaiming is there (or am I wrong)? Will try to phone them again, though it's a pain in the neck to get through.

The P50 only applies if you're claiming an in year refund for this year (2011-12)? And you do need the P45 for that. Are you claiming JSA? In which case the refund for this year is via them - and you need to give them the P45.

You shouldn't need your P45 / P60 for 2010-11. But if you're writing then no harm in attaching the P60 (copy it first - send the original).
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • I'm claiming only for 2010/11. Thanks for clarification as HMRC website is not that explicit about it. Cheers.
