Advice on handing in notice

Hi - I would appreciate a bit of advice if anyone could help. My husband has been offered a new job, starting on 3rd January 2012. He currently works for a company who will break up for their Christmas holidays on Friday 23rd December 2011 and will resume business again on Tuesday 3rd January 2012. He has to give one week's notice. Pay for this Christmas break should be made up of bank holiday days (which he normally gets paid for) and holiday days from his own allowance. If he hands his notice in on Monday 19th December, leaves on the 23rd and doesn't go back after the Christmas break, what final pay will he be entitled to? Is it better to word his resignation that he wishes to leave the company on 31st December, even though they are closed for Christmas? He also currently has 2 further days holiday which he would need to take by the end of the year or lose them. Should he be paid for these too if he doesn't take them? Any other time of the year and he could just give a nice straightfoward one week's notice but this seems so confusing! We just need to make sure we are prepared for a potential shortfall in money for the week in between his 2 jobs. Thanks in anticipation.

Why not hand his notice in on Friday 23rd December - the day he breaks up for Christmas with his last working day being Friday 30th December and start the new job on the 2nd January?
They're only closed for 3 days between Christmas and new year with the rest being bank holidays, and the 3 days will no doubt be compulsary holidays rather than them all being sacked and re-employed. Just because he's not in work wouldn't mean it can't be included in his notice.0
