We were asked today if anyone was going to strike, don't think anyone is (not from those on shift anyways) I'm working that day so will see what goes on.0

I really don't know what to do personally. I am 28, got 4 years local government service, have been a member of the pension scheme since that start and bought 6 months service with my money from a previous employer. Member of GMB. Unsure whether to strike or not. Can't make my mind up!
Sorry for hijacking your thread!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -

I don't know what to suggest curlynurse. One day I think I will strike, the next I think the gov will do as it pleases anyway so why lose a day's pay?! I just can't decide!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

Be certain that the Tories waving their Lib Dem apologists shields in front of them will get what they want. The silence from Labour on this issue is deafening.
I for one will be on strike next Wednesday. Not because I think my action on its own will achieve anything but maybe just maybe collectively it will.
To pinch a phrase from the boys from the black stuff "Fight Back!"0 -
Thanks to everyone for their point of view:)
I don't want to get into the whys and wherefores of unions and strikes
I guess what I am really asking is can they sack me if I refuse to change my day off?
I have decided that I am going to refuse, mainly for selfish reasons, I am not in any union and have no inclination to join one and I did not have any say in this strike so don't see why I should be inconvenienced by having to change my plans (my family come first in my view)
also I would be doing duties that I do not normally do and are not in the scope of my job, (also management have been told that there is to be no cover, or else what is the point of the strike, so why am I being asked to provide cover?) it is nonsensical in my view
If there is no cover, there is no cover on that day, so to quote someone close to me "I don't get paid enough to worry about carp like that":rotfl:

For the ones who don't know. Why can't you go on strike. You only lose a day's pension. We have had strikes before. Check with your employer, we have received a long letter from management how it affects us. If you want to support the strike then do it.
As for the orginal question, not sure I would be happy working for an employer like yours. That's obstructing the right of unions, they go on strike reluctantly not because it's fun or anything. As someone else says that seems wrong to ask you to cover. It's not your day never has been, how can they ask you in the first place. Not my kind of employer. Yes say you have previous commitments, which you say you have.0 -
SarEl I was not suggesting that you were anti union (especially as early notes indicate that you get a lot of work via unions). I am not anti union myself I just believe that, as in most things, some unions are better than others. I also believe that there are many people who have been let down by unions so they should not be put forward as the answer to all problems with employers.0

But management still have to provide a service on the day. Are you really saying management should not do their Job and get In support. Their job is to ensure the strike has minimal impact.Life is too short to drink bad wine!0
