Greasypalm & Quidco- how do they work?

Options
Hi

Sorry if ths is in the wrong place, but i registered ages ago with greasypalm and have built up a huge total of around £2.50 :o

However, my dad needs his car insurance sorting out and some links via greasypalm are £50-£60 off, on top of a reasonable quote.

What i want to know is if he buys the insurance, on his card - through my greasypalm account is it eligible for the money off? I would of course pass te savings onto him :D

Or would it just be easier opening a greasypalm account in his name?

Thanks

Not sure about whether its okay for you to apply on your account for your dad or not, some are quite fussy and the applicant name and the greasypalm name has to be the same.

But more importantly, i'd check out https://www.quidco.com much better rates than greasypalm, only a yearly £5 admin charge
  • thanks. I think i have an account there as well. Will probably open an account in his name to save any hassle though.

Do quidco take longer in dishing out their cashback than greasypalm? or are they pretty much the same? I did notice lloydstsb give £120 cashback through quidco, but in their "help" section i think i read it could tae 3 months in receiving any cashback, which was a bit off-putting.
  • It's possible for your family to use your cashback accounts when purchasing online. However some companies such as Quidco say its best not to for a few reasons:
    1. If you query "your" cashback amounts and upon further investigation these transaction(s) queries were not solely in your name, then Quidco/merchant(s) may refuse to pay you the cashback amount. This does make sense but....
    2. This benefits Quidco as they can get more members where they can get an annual fee of only £5 (only payable when you have enough cashback funds in your Quidco account).
Basically you just have to decide if it's worth taking the risk. Using your account to make the transaction (for somebody else) and something goes wrong as in your not given the correct amount then the owner of the account and transaction can make a stronger presence when the investigation is opened.

I am not trying to slate Quidco, although they charge an annual fee of £5 (only payable when you have enough cashback funds in your Quidco account), this is tiny compared to the amount of cashback you can get for the merchants they have. They give 100% cashback compared to other cashback sites such as Greasypalm, rpoints etc... who offer MUCH less!

It has been noted on this forum though that sometimes going through Quidco (possibly for others too but Quidco pays more than other cashback sites) can give you a slightly higher insurance quote, people have changed the web address slightly to receive a smaller quote whilst still haveing their transaction tracked and/or receiving their cashback.

Statistics for payment/tracking are available for each merchant on the right hand side of the page when you select the merchant.

It can be off putting when cashback takes a long time to be paid to you. It's not likely to be Quidco's fault, more likely to be the merchant's.

My opinion is in the end, as long as I get what is rightfully mine, I don't worry about the time it takes for me to receive my cashback (obviously not too long 6+ months  ). Plus it will make my transaction cheaper anyway. ;)
  • thanks Hibs, i did end up creating a different account, just in case it went a bit wrong, so now it's a case of wait and see (and hope!) i was even worried that the transaction i made earlier hadn't appeared straight away, and it was stating that no transactions were being tracked

fortunately someone on the forums said it could take a few hours - and it did, so at least it shows up, i don't mind waiting as long as i get it in the end, though the sooner the better, beacause, i have had bad cashback experiences regarding mobile phone contracts which took forever to resolve.

I still don't understand how they make their money, even allowing for the £5 annual fee with quidco. For instance lloydstsb will hopefully pay £120 back on a car insurance policy, if they passed even half that onto customers in the first place they may get more to sign up straight away, or maybe i'm being naive

Mr newleaf signed up for Quidco on my recommendation when his car insurance was due. He got a really cheap quote (saving £100 on the cheapest quote he'd previously had) then got £100 cashback from Quidco - which has been paid, and free green flag cover thrown in :D
