Would you complain about a member of Job Centre Staff?

  • Yes, please do. So many people have experiences such as yours ~ they made my 57 yr old mum, worked since 15 yrs, made redundant, age against her ~ cry, for the crime of telling a prospective that she likes to be busy, so could do something else during quiet times.

Her treatment of you was outrageous, A little power seems to go to the heads of some people in this environment, and the power to impose sanctions seems to be a little thrilling for some.

Congrats on the job, and the other offers, don't let her get you down, and do complain, if only to ensure further training is given to the staff to ensure they remember their clients are real life human beings.

I agree with the first couple of replies. Shes probably looking for other work herself and hasnt been successful. Her attitude smacks of jealousy to me.

She's stuck with a carp job at the Job Centre and is probably jealous.

Edit: she probably sees people each sign in day and likes to think of everyone as below her, getting excited that they got no job offers, or getting the whole Nazi thing on if people say they applied for few or no jobs this week. It takes all kinds and she probably enjoys the Job Centre job in a sick and twisted way - powweeerrrrrrrr more powweeerrrrrrrrrrr I am invincible :D
Wanted a job, now have one.
  • Just walk away, even though her behaviour was atrocious. Sad, as I had a great advisor at the JC in the end, and I made a special effort to tell him personally I had a job and to thank him for his moral support.
Someone who I thought was a friend told me 'I didn't deserve it and she should have got it' about a job last year, sour grapes can come from anywhere!
Yes, you are a bit golden and well done in tough times!
  • Have a joke at her expense. Go back to nxt sign in date, and say you didn't have enough money to go to the job because of the benefits being stopped. She'll be thinking oh shi7, if they're given targets of numbers to get into work.

    Which they're not.

Just complain to the office manager, they do take it very seriously.

I'd agree with the others about making a complaint, I have always had pretty good dealings with JCP staff but if someone has caused you a problem then they may do the same to other people if nothing is done about it.

I suspect that you they may well consider not paying you JSA for part of the period before you start work, simply because you are not actually actively job seeking any more. There was quite a long thread here recently about the rights and wrongs of this, I'm not sure if a conclusion was ever reached but if I remember rightly the person involved was sanctioned. In your case you are in a tricky position because you've admitted that you had other offers, if you'd simply said that you have a job starting on Dec 12th but will continue to look until then there wouldn't have been much they could do about it even if your job seeking had become perfunctory.

Anyway, congratulations on the new job, hopefully it'll be a long time (if ever) until you need to worry about JSA again.
  • They are not used to dealing with clever people in there, I doubt she can use Excel herself and probably thinks you were showing off.

I would either get a complaint form and attach a letter to it, and send it to the Manager, and if you dont have a decent reply contact the area manager.

I have done this in the past, and it has always been taken seriously.

A little bit of power really goes to the head of some JC staff.
  • I think with the job centre, you can't be honest with them or they treat you like that! They either think you are a low class piece of scum leeching off the country, or you are too good for them so they refuse to help you!
If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all
  • Just wanted to say congratulations northern princess on the job offer, and yes complain about the advisor. I work at a JC, and to be honest am pig sick of being tarred with the same brush as this advisor. I would have been the first to offer congratulations on securing a permanent job, its really hard to get a job and anyone who gets offered more than one is obviously doing something right. I try and treat every person I see with respect and keep in mind that one day soon I may be out of work. (Its hard to be happy all the time though as some of our service users treat us like dirt, come in drunk/high or unable to communicate with us,but mostly I see people who have fallen on hard times because of the economic climate and are eager find work)
    Complaints are taken seriously.
