Double Transfer

If a transfer has been made into your bank account and for some reason the transfer happened twice and the sender of the money only saw it go once from their account. But your account shows it has been received twice, there obviously has been a mistake somewhere along the line.

Is there any law or legislation which states how long a bank has to act to rectify this? And if they don’t rectify it within a certain timeframe then it’s their loss?

Any information would be welcome as I have been messed around so many times by banks, it would be nice for them to pay for their mistakes! As every mistake I have ever made has incurred ridiculous profiteering penalties!
