Letter from Wescot Credit Services

Hi all, Out of the blue this morning I have received a Notice of Debt Collection from Wescot Credit Services Ltd on behalf of Santander UK Plc for £301.44. I called the number as I said I know for a fact I do not owe Santander anything and they said it's from an old Alliance & leicester account - Santander have now taken over them and they have this amount against my name!
I did bank with A&L afew years ago (can't remember how long ago exactly) but the account was closed, cards destroyed, chequebooks returned etc.
I told Wescot I know nothing of this debt and have asked them to provide me with further evidence which they have said they will.
I have no intention of paying this as I know I did not leave the account in a negative balance - but as I've moved twice since closing the account I can't find the letter I sent to them closing the damn thing - so where do I go from here? Is there a template letter I can send to get this sorted out? I don't want to just ignore it as my mortgage is with Santander so I can't not deal with them

Worth checking your credit reports with at least experian and equifax to see if there is a default on your file. It will tell you owns the account and when it was placed on there and for how much.
There is a prove it letter on here somewhere, but I don't know where they live as never used them.
Best to never deal with these companies on the phone, only in writing.:beer:0 -
If they said they're going to provide proof then sit tight and wait for them to show you what they have. Once you know you can go from there.0
