How does the Wii compare to the PS3?

It doesn't. But then it isn't trying to.

The PS3 is comparable to the XBOX 360 and will have a harder fight on its hands now than when the PS2 and the XBOX went head to head.

The PS2 had the head start and a massive listing of games available. The XBOX is technically superior but always had a massive uphill battle to grab attention from the PS2 and to an extent, it failed.

The XBOX 360 has taken gaming to a new level technically (first HD ready graphics console, Digital sound quality) and has a large number of gaming titles already available. The PS3 therefore finds itself launching its direct competitor to the XBOX 360 at a higher price and with fewer games immediately. In effect the Microsoft vs Sony battle is now reversed.

No doubting at all the Sony box has the backing to get the games but the better value at present can be found in the 360.

The Wii is a truly immersive games console and while not up to the PS3 and 360 technically, it has spent all its money developing its user interfaces and this is to its immense credit. You would be hard pushed to find any game on any other console that can provide the interactivity of the Wii (maybe the Sony I-toy with PS2 although this could have been much better developed).

My own recommendations right now would be:

    Cheap console: XBOX
    Childrens console: Wii
    Top end console: 360

    I agree with LS20.

If you can find one, they are still pretty hard to get, a Wii would be ideal for the kids. At £350, the PS3 is way too expensive and the games are aimed for older players.

As some have agreed above - I'd recommend the Wii if it's within budget. Yes the games are £30+ but don't forget they are Gamecube compatible.

I have two small nephews who are 6 and 8, and they absolutely love their Gamecube. The games are great, loads of kid-centric games, and on Amazon Marketplace/eBay and even many shops offline, you can get bargains for a lot less than a tenner.

(e.g. Donkey Konga at Toys R Us for £10 including Bongo controllers this week! Gamecube controllers at Argos recently for less than £2...)

Admittedly Gamecube stocks are dwindling, but check for second hand online and there are really good bargains to be had.

The kids now want a Wii for the Wii-based games, but also so they can play their old games too.

The PS2 is a solid console, I'd say you can't go wrong, but maybe you could go one better with a Wii, being backwards and future-compatible.

Well, despite having a bad cold I agreed to be dragged out to Game today where I got bored watching the kids whilst the OH talked to the assistant. We emerged with an Xbox 360 which my husband wanted. I was gunning for the cheaper PS2. I felt so rough I wouldnt have cared what we came out with as long as we came out!!!!! It did look better I must admit but the games seem to be a bit limited. Wheres best to buy cheap games now?

I'd recommend using https://www.find-games.co.uk. This will search all retailers and find you the best deals.

    Hope this helps
