PS2 - a good buy?

Options
Hello,

I have 2 boys 7 & 5. My OH and I are contemplating buying a PS2 or PS3 or Xbox.

Is the PS2 slimline deal at toysrus a good one?

Dont know how to paste a link but its basically a black slimline PS2 with happy feet game and then one other game free for £119.99

Have no idea re slimline - is this a good thing? Aesthetically I would imagine yes but dont know in terms of function etc.

My OH reckons the Xbox is better and some of my pals have said wait for the PS3 - but at what cost?

Yours very confused xxx:confused:

    Hi Peanuts,

it all depends on what you are willing to spend. If you wait for the PS3, you can be talking of £400+, with the games on top. The graphics will be good, as with the XBox 360. But with your kids being such a young age,for such a large amount of money, would they really appreciate the graphics?

Are you sure your OH isn't suggesting the XBox for himself? :rotfl:

I would say, that for younger children, a PS2 would be a reasonable console for a good price as the games are much cheaper now, or even the new Wii if you can get your hands on one (not sure about current availability).

Not too sure myself, but the Wii games look to be more aimed at younger children, and with the wand controller, it will give them a little excersize
  • If you are looking to not spending a lot of money (and to buy any of the latest consoles you would have to) and if your kids are new to gaming getting hold of a second hand PS2 or even Gamecube and ask for some recomendations for games that their age group might like could be a good starting point.

Amazon have the standard PS2 for £95 delivered and there are any number of really good Platinum Edition titles at cheap prices which will beat the Toys R Us offer

  • I have just bought a black slimline ps2 this morning at argos for £94.00, no games with it but they play all the old ps1 games so my little boy is happy
  • The PS2 is inexpensive and has a great selection of games on it! It should also be instock everywhere. The games can also be very cheap, too. The slimline version has the same functionality as the standard, so no worries there. :)

The Wii is £180, but you'd be surprised how fun it is. You may well find it worth the extra money, but you'll also need to drop £30 on a copy of Wiiplay (which has a second Wiimote), and probably another £12.99 on a Nunchuck, so that your boys can play games simultaneously - that's £222.99 all in. If you can stretch to it, I'd recommend it, but if not, the PS2 is still a great buy. :)

The ps2 is great but found it can be hard for the little ones, mine aged 2,4,6,9 made me sell theres so they could have a Wii.

They find the games easier and having no wires is a bounus, my 4 year old love the bowling game as she can interact with the sysem and play against her sisters....

So Given the option between the 2 for kiddies id go for the Wii and you can still get happy feet!!!!!

    Wiimote, Wiiplay, Nunchuck?????
    AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Its official, I am old!! I've lost touch with it all! And I never thought it would happen to me...I'll be going on about the youth of today and the rubbish music around at the moment if I'm not careful

Oh yes, I forgot, how does the Wii compare to the PS3 then? Is it comparable or will the PS3 be a lot better? Back to my cocoa. Wheres my slippers?
  • Yeepers, I'm sorry! :D It's my fault, I'm at work so I kinda hurried my response there. ;)

To control games on the Nintendo Wii, the right hand holds a Wiimote, and (for the games that need it) the left hand holds a Nunchuck (on the PS2, you just need one joypad per person). Wiiplay is the name of a gamepack which has lots of minigames, can be had for £30-£33, and includes a Wiimote (therefore recommended, as a Wiimote costs £30 on its own).

If you have any more questions about accessorwiis, please don't hesitate to ask. :D (And yes, the Wii puns never stop...)

Edit: Here is a bargainlicious Nunchuck for £11.99 delivered. :)

I'm sure its simple really but I might have to consult with my 7 year old!
I'm sure the OH knows all about this but thought I'd investigate it myself. I might take a trip into town and get some spotty teenager to show me the difference between them all - and then come out more confused probably.
Thanks for the explanation - wii-eally appreciate it xx
