I've used Superdrug, Boots and Wilkinson's own brand. All very good but the most impressive was Wilkinson's foam one. It was a bit messy but long last so I didn't need to redo my roots 3 weeks later.

I have very dark hair and only a white band in the front which is very resistant to dying! I try to just tint this front bit so want good colour match but sometimes put it all over.

I've asked in Boots and Superdrug if any PPD free and the SA haven't known what I'm talking about!

Do these three have lower levels of PPD?
  • sophlowe45 - if you want one with just lower levels of PPD then Naturtint is really good. When i use it there is no tingling or strong smell from it. It feels like a benign product. Since i've read all this stuff aobut PPD though i'm not happy about using stuff - but if you are that one has very low levels and you can tell the difference.

But Logona would have worked out expensive on a long term basis so now I am ordering henna and other herbs from Henna Boy UK and I mix these with a cheap conditioner to apply which I have to do every two weeks because of the roots and colour fading but this is a lot easier to apply. The colour is less brown than I achieved with the Logona as the greys are more coppery but it still works and no PPDs

    Good luck

I keep hearing about henna products - i know nothing about them! Is henna considered a relatively safe substance? Just curious.

I used to use henna when I was younger. It makes up into a paste that is very messy and smelly but gives a very rich red tone to dark brown hair. Don't think it would be good for covering grey as I'm sure it would make it pink.

If people are wanting to avoid putting dye on scalp buy a cap for highlight and just do fine highlights or in my case lowlights.
  • LOL - that shows what I know - didn't even realise you could buy caps....I know hairdressers use them but didn't know you could buy them....this might be a good alternative to putting that stuff on the scalp.....

If you have a Salon Services or Sally near you they should sell you one. Used to be hairdressers only but think they will serve the public now. They aren't cheap and last for a limited time but if you are having problems with dyes it should solve the problem. Buy a pre-punched one. You will probably need the help of a friend to pull the hair through and it is quite tedious and then just apply your dye as normal. Use lots of conditioner before you take off and wash the cap and dry to try and preserve the length of time it will last. Good luck.
  • Just been looking up Elumen hair dyes on google. Worth looking at.....US based company, may be pricey (haven't seen the price yet but from what i've read from reviews) - but doesn't use PPD or any related chemicals....works by ion something or other....LOL! Will copy and paste this to other hair dye threads here. :-)

I use Surya Hair Cream, it's ppd free and covers grey. They also do a powder but I find the cream is much easier and it's just like a "normal" hair dye.

Have you tried the smart beauty site?? They sell some items that are specifically ppd free!

I will read the site tomorrow, but have to get to bed as i'm working tomorrow - does the surya product contain anything related to ppd?

I'm thinking of giving this a go....just at first glance tonight i'm wondering what's the catch....guess i've got a little skeptical after so much searching....and also because i've just used the gentlest clairol product and think it's made my head itchy (not sure because i have another itchy scalp issue - that's usually not affected by the more 'nasty' hair dyes!).

but thinking i will give surya a go now. :)
