This coming from a Tory when even Tony Blair recently backed away from his pro-EMU views:

I actually heard Neil Kinnock on Radio 4 about a week or so (World at One) ago saying that he was indeed wrong about the euro and was thankful that Gordon Brown ensured that we stayed out of what had become a total mess.0

'became'? - it was always a political construct without economic underpinnings. Those against it said it could never work long term without deeper political union. Those who supported it agreed.
Arguing that it did make sense at first but 'became' a mess is disingenuous at best.ChiefGrasscutter wrote: »I actually heard Neil Kinnock on Radio 4 about a week or so (World at One) ago saying that he was indeed wrong about the euro and was thankful that Gordon Brown ensured that we stayed out of what had become a total mess.I think....0 -
I believe the 'correct' euro view is that had UK joined in the beginning, our brilliance and influence would have prevented the current situation occurring0

At the time, I believed that politicians (not bankers) were in control of our future, and that a European consensus was inevitable

After Britain's (and Italy's!) embarrassing withdrawal from the ERM you thought the politicians had more power than that of the likes of George Soros?!At the time, I believed that politicians (not bankers) were in control of our future, and that a European consensus was inevitable
If politicians deal with reality: i.e. they don't borrow absurd amounts and don't peg their currencies then politicians will have more power than currency traders and bond dealers. It is not rocket science."The state is the great fiction by which everybody seeks to live at the expense of everybody else." -- Frederic Bastiat, 1848.0 -

It took until 2007 for me to realise the extent of the dominance of the financial sector over national governments

soros made money betting on a 100% certainty
the UK balance of payments problem was not of his making or indeed that of the financial markets
we had an absurdly over valued currency because we exported too little and imported too much
pretending otherwise was political and economic fantasy0 -
I saw the interview.
Far from being senile I found Lord Heseltine very lucid and convincing, and he ran rings around the BBC interviewer.
In the same programme, I found Nigel Farage (UKIP) very lucid and convincing ... and he ran rings around the BBC interviewer.
Both of them agreed on the reasons why the EEC/EU was first established, which seem as valid now as they have always been.0
