Refusing delivery?

When you refuse delivery of an order, how exactly does that work? Does the courier give you some kind of receipt showing you refused delivery? Do you have to pay return fees? I can imagine refusing an item and it going back on the truck but it later showing up as delivered and you'd have no recourse to prove you didn't have it. Is there anything I need to keep in mind or know about refusing deliveries?

Why are you refusing delivery?
Does it make a difference? Do you have an answer that would depend on the circumstances? I originally put the explanation, then realized it was probably superfluous and cut it. And I may well not refuse the delivery, I'm just trying to think of my options.
The shortest version is we got notice of a huge increase to our already hefty rent after the item shipped, and I realized we may have to move this summer because of that and will no longer have room for the bedroom tv I ordered.0 -
When you paid for tv, what did it say about returns etc?0

It depends.
When you refuse delivery the item goes back to the depo and awaits it being returned to the sender.
However, about this time last year I won some hair care products from L'Oreal and they were sent to the wrong address (correct address was on the parcel, delivery man sent them to the wrong address). I contacted the company who sent them back out again and used the same courier and again I didn't get them.
It was then when I complained a 3rd time that the company sending them gave the address and I contacted the delivery company, I was able to track down the person who had been refusing them and so complain.
It basicly transpired that instead of taking them back to the depo to be returned the delivery man had kept them!! Some were returned to me semi used with the delivery man saying "oh they get a bit knocked about when they get to the depo" I complained and nothing was done. No refund and no way to complain. The prize had been worth easily over £300 and the amount I got back amounted to around £20 as they were half used products they really amounted to nothing.
It was DPD delivery if its any help and yes, the delivery man still has his job, it appears my complaints and proof of what happened all fell on deaf ears and yes, I also contacted the police who dropped the case after initial apparent interest due to "lack of evidence".
If it was DPD deliver I'd be very careful and wanting to contact the company to ensure the product was returned and not kept by the driver.0 -
