Crumble disaster - can it be salvaged!!

Don't laugh but yesterday evening I thought I'd prepare ahead todays apple crumble and ended up having a fight with it as it just wouldn't "crumble".

I walked out in disgust on it last night (I've made crumble loads before and never had a problem). This morning I realised my mistake - plain not s - r flour and most of all I mixed the sugar into the flour before rubbing in. God knows why.

So, I'm restarting the crumble as its for guests so I can't risk it being wrong but I have a HUGE bowl of floury, sugary, buttery mess - does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do with ?!

Thanks

ZC

    It sounds like shortbread.
  • Try adding some oats and using it anyway, I think it would be fine. Could you test a little bit, small dish, bit of apple, crumble mix?
  • I never rub in the flour and sugar, just bung all the ingredients (I use plain flour anyhow) in a bowl and mix with an electric whisk.
If I make too much I add some extra butter and make biscuits.

I cant see why it would make any difference to be honest for a crumble, I mean its not as if it needs to rise like a cake or yorkshire pudding, perhaps someone could enlighten me.

(I get the impression that you have put too much butter in it if its 'messy wet'

Thats exactly the way I do my baking, cant do with all this faffing on, bit in here and a bit in there and Ive been baking for 40 odd years, I dont even use scales, just the tablespoon or my eyes.

  • I add all the ingredients at the beginning for crumble anyway, even when making mixture by hand. It'll all taste fine. :)

  • I do this 'mess' all the time, I just add more flour and oats, then grab a handful, squeeze it together then crumble lumps over stewed fruit, or ......squeeze it all together, roll into a decent sized sausage shape and cut into ( thickness of your little finger) discs, lay flat on baking paper/ tray , then bake. Voila
    Shortbread biccies rustic style :)
