Stuck with self assessment

Several months ago, OH received a letter from HMRC saying he needed to fill in a tax return. OH and I left the UK in March 2010 to live in the US. He registered to do it online, and was informed he'd have to wait for an activation code to come by mail. The code never arrived, and he had to request it again - it finally arrived this week.

Today he's gone on to do the return, but the gateway seems to suggest you can't do the return online if you don't live in the UK. Is this correct? It also says the deadline for a paper return has passed. So what happens now? How do we proceed from here, and how do you do a paper return if we need to? We were both on PAYE in the UK so are totally new to this self-assessment malarky.
