Can't Get Life Insurance

I can't get life insurance. I have stage 4/5 chronic kidney disease; dialysis and transplant are on the horizon. This means that no one wants to insure my life.

I am the main earner in the house, and still in full time work getting on with life, but I am concerned that one day I may drop down dead and then there's no help for my fiance and son.

What could I do instead? I'm 36, if that makes any difference :)

  • sorry to hear of your problem of trying to get insurance,in my opinion do not try looking on the internet as it is too specialised and you need a person who you can sit down and talk too.in my case i was 26 and had a heart attack, at 28 i was diagnosed with cancer of both lungs, stomach, abdomen and both testicles, then at 29 i had a stroke. have tried for 15 years to get insurance and have not found anyone who is willing.in my case im alive and kicking.
    so wishing you luck

There are high risk life assurers who would consider you and offer terms. However, the premium would almost certainly be beyond your means unless you are of higher net worth.

Utilising employer benefits where you are not individually underwritten should be an option if available. Pensions are paid out on death as a lump sum. Tax relief on premiums enhance the value and its tax free on payout.

  • Try ASDA's instant life cover. It's not medically underwritten but offers a far higher level of cover than the typical non-underwritten over 50's plans. I had a client a few days ago in a similar situation to yourself and upon studying the key features there are certain caveats about pre-existing conditions but only relativing to cancers and heart conditions. Nothing renal linked from what I saw.

Hope this helps and best wishes with your treatment

    I'd suggest saving. Big time.

You may also consider accidental death plans. I wouldn't usually suggest them, and they're no use to you if your body simply stops working naturally, but they are an option if the number 45 gets you on a rush hour morning.

Dustonh's point about workplace arrangements is a very good one. My wife can insure me very cheaply via her employer's scheme with no underwriting. Do either of you have access to similar schemes?

Is there any sort of death in service benefit available inside or outside of your pension scheme?

What benefits, if any, does your pension scheme offer to dependents if you die? Can you lever these in some way?

Make sure, also, that your fiance is protected by any arrangements you already have. Things might be dealt with differently as you're unmarried.
  • So sorry to hear about your condition. Ok, you might have just loosen your hope about getting a life insurance, maybe you can ask then personally a reliable insurance company that at least grant insurance to persons with cancer or any sickness in particular.
  • Is there a Charity that deals with your type of condition or a support organisation? They may have details of companies willing to cover you. Good luck.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

  • My OH has CKD (stage 5, on PD and awaiting transplant). We havent done any research on this, perhaps we should.

I know he currently has a death in service and private medical cover with work, and I guess his mortgage is already covered (taken out pre-diagnosis and before we met).

I guess when taking out anything new he will now have to declare it. Hmmmmm
