cheap stuffing for sewing projects

I don't wear tights so don't have any to recycle and kapok is so dear. A trip to the sewing shop on the high street had me raising my eyebrows this morning and keeping my money in my purse till I'd had a chance to enquire on here.

Does anyone know of cheap, washable stuffing ideas for soft toys & Xmas decorations please. Online places would be fine. The solution must be machine washable as I want it for baby bits n bobs so hygiene is always a factor.

I'd also like to make a couple of soft velvet lap quilts as Xmas pressies.

  • It depends what you are making, but I often find cushions and pillows can be found on offer, although some of the stuffing can be lumpy so you have to choose carefully! The bonus is it is usually washable and is certified if it has passed flame retardant tests etc.
  • I was going to say the same about pillows and cushions , I made sock monkeys one year and unstuffed pillows that they were selling in poundland at the time, and they were fab, maybe smart price/value pillows depending on what you are doing.

    Hope that helps
If its not cheap and its not free I don't want it and I will wait till it is :p
  • I save old duvets to use for stuffing

  • The stuff from the haberdashers isn't usually expensive in my experience....usually about three quid for a big bag that lasts for ever. At least, it was three years ago when I bought mine.....I swear it just replicates itself when I'm not looking....the bag still seems as full as it ever was :o

I use old (but washed) pillows. You could ask on freecycle to see if anyone has anything similar.

I was going to suggest wadding - the type used for quiltmaking - it isnt that expensive and a roll is huge!
but, if its just for small toys, then possibly the cheap cushion inners available in places like Shaws or Poundland would be more than sufficient for your needs!
