RTB started before Thatcher. She boosted it, rather than invented it.

No - the RTB was introduced in the 1980 Housing Act - Thatcher was PM from 1979

Prior to the national RTB there was a limited scheme run by the GLC
  • I dont know why so many people have a problem with this?
We all agree that the country needs more housing. Councils are going to build with the money generated.
I plan to buy my council and hopefull upsize as soon as possible, that will mean another affordable home on the market.
    Who looses?
  • I think Camden's policy refers to "affordable housing".
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

    Nobody really.

There will be an element of blatant profiteering if it is anything like last time but then no system is perfect.

I'd help someone buy their council house if it made me money. Isn't this what enterprise is all about ?

If the government want to give 50% discounts on houses (10s of thousands of pounds) it should be available to all, not just the chosen few. What about giving a few thousand quid off the tax bill to all those that do not get this wonderful offer?

That would be perfect; except its not going to help build any houses.

    so the premise is that

    1. councils have lots of free land
    2. that half the value of a council flat/house can build a new flat or house
    3. that the profits from the deal should go to people who are current lucky enough to be council tenants

given the council has all this free land, why can't they give this land to the general electorate (maybe lottery) so they can build their own homes... fair to all

Wot I said. Thatcher didn't invent it. That was a GLC commie lot.

They reserved a percentage of houses in my estate when it was built in 2005 to be council houses, I hope the people who got those ones get to buy them for half price, because its not enough of slap in the face that they don't have jobs and get the rent paid for. This country has become a bit of a joke.

If I could offer one suggestion, it's to bear in mind that the government may be about to support high LTV, low interest rate mortgages for first-time buyers. Not only should this ensure a return of first-time buyers in large numbers, house prices should noticeably rise too thanks to their government backed purchasing power.

Looks like someone jumped the gun a bit
