Do Employers give Tax Refunds via PAYE?

  • The total gross pay to date is nearly £8500 which would have been April/May/Jun and redundancy I guess. The tax to date is 692.

I'll see if I can get her to find the P45 bit but she's at work today

From your first post you say "After 11 months she found a Sunday job (minimum wage), worked there for 4 Sunday's and found another job." This would mean that the earnings you refer to must have been from over a year ago and so should not have been used by the current employer. For this tax rebate to be correct the "nearly £8500" has to have been paid since 5/4/11.

There may be tax due back for last year but it would have to come from the tax office.
  • Just to clarify. Maternity started Dec 2010. Made redundant July 2011. Nov 2011 found a Sunday job.

Just found the P45 and it says Total Pay to Date 8330.67 and Total Tax to date 1292.00

As a lay person it looks like she has paid too much tax as the allowance before you start paying tax is £7,470 (to me it looks like around £1,000 too much tax paid). Were there months where she earned much more than £622? These should be the months where she paid tax. However overall this tax should be paid back on lower pay months.

  • She has only worked 3 months of this tax year April/May/Jun and I assume must have paid quite high tax in the month (June or July) when her redundancy package was paid
  • The recent change in computer system at HMRC is bringing up a lot of anomylies from the last few years. I had a letter relating to tax underpaid in 2007/8. Turns out the employer submitted duplicate P11Ds and so HMRC thought I had 2 company cars!!!
