Ex Setup Online Accounts In My Name - can they be switched to her?

My ex-partner set up a lot (about 8) online shopping credit accounts in my name and I am wondering if there is anyway to get them transferred to her?

It isn't the fact that they aren't being paid but I know for a fact some payments have been missed and i recently received a rejection letter form another company she must have tried to set up another account with.

Any help or advice would be appreciated as I am worried if she decides she cant be bothered or doesnt have the funds to make the montly payments i will end up in serious difficulties paying them on top of my own debts.

Did she set them up with your consent? If so then you will be stuck with them in your name. (You could try asking them to switch the accounts into her name now, or to close them down so at least there is no further spending - but you won't be able to get the past history removed from your file).

If she did it without your consent and you were not aware of it at the time then you could inform them that it was fraud, however thats obviously going to land her in serious trouble. And the catalogue companies are likely to expect you to inform the police of the fraud.

If she is still trying to set up new accounts in your name then that is definitely fraud. You could try to protect against this by considering CIFAS protective registration (which costs £14 for a year but will mean she can't set up any new accounts).

  • We were together when they were set up, i only thought there was a couple, but now i receive mail from quite a few. I wouldnt want to be reporting it as fraud so might just have to see if they can change the names and account details or as you say maybe just ask that they are close and the monthly payments are made.
  • But these accounts could go on and on and on. Ten years down the line, she could still be using the accounts and you would still be at risk.

You need to get the matter sorted out now.

Definitely close the accounts, then speak to her about how she is going to pay them off. If she can't / won't pay them off then you need to seriously consider reporting the fraud. Opening credit accounts in someone else's name without their permission is fraud whether you are a couple or not.
