Especially as Puskas died in 2006
Seriously, it appears quite easy to get "stars" to appear for "free" in mega charity events, such as last nights Children in Need Concert, but nowadays it is difficult to imagine such high profile superstars taking part in such a small, less well publicised event.

Not cynical - it annoys the hell out of me when "stars" only do their charity work as part of their self promotion.
However I do know that players like Craig Bellamy do a huge amount that goes under the radar.
This story chimed with me as I use to watch South Liverpool play at Holly Park in the late 1970's as it was about 1/2 hour walk away.
The grounds claim to fame was that it was the first place to host a match under "permanent" floodlights in 1949.US housing: it's not a bubble - Moneyweek Dec 12, 20050 -
Great story.
I remember seeing Glen Hoddle and a bunch of ex-Chelsea and Leeds players do a charity game for the cottage hospital in the place I was raised in about 1982. That was completely off the radar and the players seemed to have a blast.
An ex-international manager lived in the village who I guess had the connections.0 -

We had a few big stars where I grew up. Some proper, internationally known mega-star types.
My experience was that the Z-list and the A-list would happily turn out as much as was reasonably possible given that they were busy people who had a career to run still.
The B minuis lot (especially 1980s ageing Radio 1 DJs and one who we shall call 'MR' in particular) used to give nothing and take as much as they could. They tended to be especially rude to shop girls (MR's speciality was making teenage Saturday girls cry, I saw it more than once. Is it worth a 50 y/o man swearing at a 15y/o girl because her boss has told her to charge 5p for a carrier bag?)0 -

It's worth remembering that the ball at the time was rather like a cannonball compared to the balloons of today.0
