How long do I need to keep paperwork for?

My cupboard is fit to burst with the amount of paperwork in there. I want to have a major shredding session but wondered if there is certain things I need to keep.

I've got utility bill's coming out of my ears, about 10 years worth of payslips and bank statements etc. Ton's of share's paperwork (2 files full just for 1 company!)

What can I ditch and what do I need to keep? Anyone know?

You're not obliged to keep anything, it's personal preference. I keep 3 years worth of payslips, 6 years of bank statements (if you want anything more than a year old you have to pay the bank for a copy), and 2 years of utilities.

Usually with things like the Mortgage I keep all the important stuff; statements, letters telling me the rate has changed etc...
