Getting credit after bankruptcy

My partner was made bankrupt in July 2003 and discharged in April 2005.She went to Nationwide several months ago to get an account which came with the minimum of facilities. She was advised to "come back in 6 months time" to see if she could get additional features like a debit card etc but on calling in yesterday she was told to come back in a few months time to see what they could give her. As this is obviously a credit checking issue what is the best way for her to build up her credit? Any cards etc that have easier acceptance? Anything she could try? She is trying to set up her own business in the near future so any credit help would be welcome for loans etc
