Checking who I owe money to

Is there a way I can find out who I owe money to? I've tried Experian but having had an account with them before they want to charge me £40+ for the privillege. I think I may have a 2 year old gas bill that I havent paid!

You can get a copy of your experian statutory credit file for £2, and a copy of your equifax and callcredit files for £2 as well. That will give you a bit of an idea who you might owe money to, but its not a definitive list, and not all utility companies report to the credit reference agencies (though this is gradually changing and more of them are starting to do so).

Thanks Tixy. Is it worth my contacting the gas company? its been nearly two years since I've had anything from them or my even contacting them - Its just something I've forgotten about.

Which gas company is it? - If its british gas its likely to be on your credit file (possibly also if its scottish power). If its others then AFAIK they don't report to the credit reference agencies yet.

Obviously if they've obtained a CCJ against you for the debt then it would be on the file regardless of which company it was.

Not sure - but thats what it said on the website. Besides, I cant really afford £15 a month given my situation - £180 a year I could use on debts.
