Real free software

Following a spam post earlier today purporting to show us where to get free software, I thought I'd post the site I really DO use - it's https://www.versiontracker.com
The site has a mixture of commercial, shareware, beta, updates, freeware, etc., but if you go to the "updates by category" tab, you can select freeware towards the bottom of the page.
Registration with the site is free.

Edited to add: For all you Apple Mac nutters like me out there, there's also http://www.macupdate.com/

https://www.downloads.com is good. Often the programs are free trials with a time limit but there are also some freeware programs on there e.g. real player etc...0

Yeah, that's not a bad site at all, but VersionTracker is much more comprehensive, with dozens of new items listed daily.0 -
Yup, I like VersionTracker's comprehensiveness.
Speaking of versions, I've also used "old version" websites on a couple of occasions -- sounds daft, I know, but I remember installing the latest version of ZoneAlarm a couple of years back and it played havoc with my PC, and having 'lost' the earlier version I needed to locate it ASAP.
There was also a PC game (can't remember which one now) which steadfastly refused to play despite downloading the latest patches, etc etc. I then found an "old" driver, installed that, and surprise, surprise, the game worked.
One of the sites which catalogs old versions says "old doesn't always mean worse" (or maybe it's "new doesn't always mean better"). And it's true.
I'm not going to put any links in here but if anyone is interested, just Google "old software versions" or "old versions".0 -
https://www.freewarefiles.com is also quite good. They ONLY list software which is 100% FREE.0

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ - For a free fully functional software package daily (sometimes good - sometimes not... look at the history and judge for yourself!)
Also http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/ - Free game every day - fully featured but not exactly cutting edge!
And http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/freeware/ for a huge freeware library
I've gotten quite a few programs from this site - all 100% spyware/adware free!

http://www.mailwasher.net/ comes highly reccomended by people I know.
My preference is to use http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ instead of Outlook Express. You would need to mark messages as junk as they come through for a week or so, then select to automatically move junk messages to the junk folder. A few still get through but as you mark more as junk, it keeps on "learning". That way, I can still quickly scan through the junk to see if there is anything that has been filtered mistakenly0
