Recycling...........

I am not a green as I would like to be but I do try!

I recycle as much as possible but have been reading these reports in the press about this poor town in China where all our rubbish is being dumped. The noxious fumes and the pollution it is causing sounds pretty terrible.

So - am I doing a good thing by recycling all my waste through the council's green bin schemes? I have gathered that it is pretty much just moving the problem elsewhere - from here to China. It all seems very good news for us here about - so much less rubbish being dumped into the land fill sites, but apart from boosting the UK statistics - it is still doing just as much harm.

So my question is - do I continue doing it?!

The majority of my recycle stuff is glass bottles (wine) and plastic milk containers. It appears to be all the plastics which are causing a lot of the issues. Is there a better way of buying my milk - a greener way of doing it? I am reluctant to use the milk men as they do seem a lot more expensive than the supermarkets (working on the theory that recycling the glass may be easier or better than plastic). My family gets through over 32 pints of milk a week so cost is still important.

Any ideas welcome!

Thanks

Flower

Its a dilemar (sp) isn't it, and I know exactly what you mean.

I've started to realise that recyling isn't the answer, (as you have) and I doubt I have the answers, but this is my take on things.

Its easy for us to have a milk man as we only have three bottles a week. It is more expensive than the supermarket, but since we only have 3 bottles a week, cost dosn't come into it.

Now, wine, I do know about :D How about wine boxes  your get 4 botttles in a box for about the same price, (depending on which end of the market you buy at). We re-use the boxes for ebay postage / torn up in the compost or back to recycling again. At least its less glass.

I surpose with packing its a case of searching out foods which have minimal packaging, lets say cakes which don't have cream on top so they don't need so much protection.

Its not easy, and noone has all the answers, I'm sure, but we can all do our little bit.
