college said i have to pay

Hi everyone i a first time poster and need some help for my son.
He has been attending colllege for 2 years for 1 day a week as an apprentice mechanic.
He is 21 years old and the college are now saying that he has to pay for the rest of the course, and are now refusing to enroll him on level 3 until he pays.
It states on their website that the first full level 3 qualification is free for students aged 19-24 but they are refusing to let him on the course, and we are not sure of what to do next.
Thank you for any help you can give.

have you asked them *why* he has to pay? That'd be a start.

Contact who provides the funding for the college, they will be most interested in why they are taking subsidiary's and asking students to pay.
You may need to drill down to the top dog and get past the air head on the phone.

  • If he is an apprentice then he doesn't have to pay for the course, period.
If he has finished his apprenticeship and wants to progress onto the Level 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship then the employer may have to pay a small fee (may be waived by college in the current climate) or if he is not doing it as an apprenticeship then he may well have to pay as he is 19+. It all depends on whether it is an apprenticeship or not.
