tax rebate confusion

Hi,
Sorry if i've posted this in the wrong place.
I've had a read through the threads here for some help but can't seem to find anything similar to my issue.
I'm travelling around the world and left the UK on 11th August. I've taken a career break from my employer so I'm still employed. As I had holidays and time in lieu to take, I was still paid up until 23rd September. Because of payroll issues with my company, I received a full salary in September, and 2/3 of my full pay in October. Upon contacting the company, they have explained that I have been overpaid by a full month.
My query is more around my tax. I'm on the standard tax code (i think it's 737something). I've paid tax on all my earnings since the start of the year, but won't get paid again for November or before end of the financial year (since i don't go back to work until 5th March and the Payroll system won't catch up until April).
I'm not sure my employer will tell HMRC I'm away, and I'm not really sure what I need to do to get any extra tax back? I don't arrive back in the UK until 1st March, so part of me is thinking do I just wait until April and then get a cheque refund? My friends who are travelling with me are teachers and they are being paid their tax refund each month while they are away.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated!!!

Wait until you get home and your p60 has arrived - then contact HMRC - you'll probably be asked to complete a self assessment form for the year. Send it back to HMRC asap and any tax refund should be made in due course.0

If you are still employed by your company, they should put you through the payroll each month with nil gross pay, so you receive any tax rebates due each month (and payslips as you are still due payslips if you are still employed). But they might decide to put you on hold instead, in which case, do as xylophone says.Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j0

As post #3 ...... it should be done via payroll. Under no circumstances involve yourself with SA .... it's not the mechanism to do it nor do the timeframes fit. You complete a P50 if your company doesn't handle the payroll appropriately.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
