However nights we are here for the full 10 hours as we are seen as different yet we are not entitled to the same.
That's the clue: you are seen as different. You are not entitled to the same.

Where I work, we have some staff who work 'office hours', while others have to do an evening shift at least once a month, and yet others are on a 24/7 shift rota. And then there are the staff who do 'on call' as well as any of the above. There is no obligation for each group to have the same terms and conditions as any other group.

i dont see why management would have a problem with 2 staff happy to swap shifts and having it approved well in advance. as far as they are concerned the shifts are covered and 2 staff are reasonably happy. have noticed that if staff moan and complain they will tend not to be accommodated either by colleagues or management.
Teamwork means.......never having to take all the blame yourself ;)

No we see ourselves as a different shift so other practices that go on here when we raise these with management we are told we are NO different to the other shifts!

To be fair you aren't really working Christmas Day, just the evening. You will have plenty of time to spend with family, open presents etc. You really think you are getting a worse deal than those working during the day? If I had the choice I know which shift I would rather work.

So what if you can't have a drink? It's hardly a big deal.

I understand the concern about salary enhancements, but in my opinion those working during the day on 25 December deserve more money than those working in the evening.

Also, you should think ahead to next Christmas and book that off. Since you work 4 on 4 off you should have seen this coming months ago.

What a load of carp, if someone is working through the night then they will more than likely be in bed all day and as for the day shift deserving more cash, dont make me laugh, at least the day shift will get home for tea/late christmas dinner whilst the night worker is just getting ready to go.
I do agree however that the OP has had months to sort this out so its tough on him but since he does 4 on 4 off then it will be his turn to be off one day. As far as wanting double pay for the full shift then he should read his contract and if its not written there then he'll have to take what he can get, at the end of the day its a job and if he dont want it im sure someone else will.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.

Thank you someone speaking a bit of sense!

I agree on this bit, I did both in my younger days, and working nights was much much harder.
Some people actually prefer them, but I would say it's mainly because of practical reasons, like working around kids/partner's working hours than actually liking the shift itself.

Well we are all entitled to our opinions. Just because mine is different to yours doesn't make mine "carp". Personally, if I had the choice between a night shift on Christmas evening at 1.5 rate or a day shift at double rate I would prefer to do the night shift.

I think if we knew what the OP actually does for a job it might help. Do the day shift and night shift actually do the same job?

Are the day and night shift paid at the same rate? I have always known night workers to get paid more than day workers, even for the same job.

Have to say if I was working xmas night I wouldn't be spending more than 2 hours in bed during xmas day (probably wouldn't even do that if it was my first night), but then when I do nights that's how I tend to work it anyway.

IMHO xmas eve was a worse night to work, hating doing that shift - off this year, next I'm going to volunteer for the night shift I think, for me the hands down worse shift is Christmas morning (closely followed by xmas eve night) and xmas night is the best, xmas afternoon being ok, but everyone is different.

I think for us the extra pay applies all shift if the majority of the shift is in the 'unsocial' pay, otherwise you just get the specific hours - it doesn't normally affect xmas day as boxing day (for us) is paid at the same rate
  • The days staff have less responsibility than the nights staff die to there being no managers about we have to deal with escalations and emergencys etc. we are a facilities management company.

Days and nights paid the same salary but nights get an enhancement. This is my point we get an enhancement for nights anyway but days have to work some bank holidays a year but they get paid double time at Xmas.

You are getting paid double time on Christmas too. But Christmas finishes at midnight.

Who deals with emergencies on Christmas day if the day staff get to go home early?
