Quality rechargeables are the way forward. The high amh ones are best, I've got a GP Powerbank (through work) and it charges in 15mins and they last ages. Really useful for head torches at this time of year!

Making the most of disposable batteries is a good idea, but getting a charger and some reusable ones is worth considering, particularly with the latest reusable batteries being much better than they used to be. I've mentioned these before, but they're worth another mention. Eneloop batteries are the best rechargeable batteries I've tried, they last a long time in use and don't self discharge much either, so you really can charge them up and save them for whenever you need them.
