Free calls to UK from US

Options
I'm planning a trip to the US soon and was looking into ways to make cheap phone calls home. Anyway I came across this site https://www.allfreecalls.net which offers free calls from america to landlines all over the world. I plan on using it so thought I would share it here for anybody they know who will be holidaying in america.

1: In america dial 712-858-8094
2: Dial 011 follow by your Countrycode (UK 44)

Free call time! obviously I've not tested this out but if anybody has experience with it please post so I know I can use it when I go on holiday for calling home.

I am in US at the moment - I think only prob with that is that the number used is not a "free" number, All numbers in your local area in the USA are free, or 25c from a phone box - we have found it better to use a company called Noble http://www.nobelcom.com/nobelcom/jsp/productselection/productselection.jsp?from_country=1&to_country=289&AFFN=151047443 This is a much cheaper way as you use a free local number, enter the pin an the money comes off the "account" of $20. The charges are different from a call box, but still think they are cheaper.

I tried to use it last time I was over there, and it was horrible - vast introduction in two languages before I could enter the number I wanted, didn't work half the time.. You're better off with a calling card - mine's from http://www.idt.net - 10c/min to UK, both landline and mobile, with 1-800 access.

  • As someone who will be living in the U.S. permanently soon, I have a great interest in this thread as I will still have a need to call the UK.

Maybe when I get there some of the telecom suppliers will do good long-distance deals with my standard phone rental?

If not then I will be looking into an alternative, pity there's nothing like 18185 there! Not that I've heard about yet anyway...

Dave, I just looked at your link (idt.net which you then link into https://www.pennytalk.com) and it seems the UK rate is $0.02 per minute and $0.49 for the connection - have the rates changed or were you talking about something else? If my figures are correct that seems pretty good to me, I would be able to talk to the UK for an hour for $1.69 ($0.49 + (60 * $0.02)).
  • I used Pennytalk to phone the UK when I was in the states a few years ago and found them to be very reliable and cheap :)

outbidder - I hope you don't mind me asking but how are you moving to USA?
    work permit? family sponsor?
Just asking cos I am desperate to get to the states some time and it is a real nightmare.
    Sorry for going OT

OK thanks for helping me write that one off guys :D

I was thinking, I have a pocketpc with wifi and it has a mic built in which I have used for VOIP, so maybe what I should do is find a VOIP SIP company, get £5 on the account and use the pocketpc on a wireless network (hopefully there'll be a near by free wifi) and hopefully just make hours and hours of calls.
  • Their are lots of these types of FREE call suppliers.Your find a list here:
