Falsely inflated salary in job advert?

  • It's not illegal, maybe unethical.
  • Alot of people are getting hung up on the whole "oh my gosh why did they offer such a low salary" thing like this is something we've all just realized is happening. Today if companies can save 5/7/10K on one salary then they will. Multiply that by X5 new starts and you get the picture. It may not be right, but thats the way alot of companies work. If you believe you're going to walk in there with the whole package and get offered the full whack with a handshake then thats good for you, but i guarantee that the amount of times employers offer out initially, the top end of their offering is probably quite small.
As for the demoralizing thing, then i don't really know where you're coming from, and i mean that. I would not expect anyone who came in through the doors of our company to be demoralized, if we explained to them that they didn't have experience in the right area, or that they perhaps would require some guidance as the position would not be exactly the same [seldom new roles are] as their previous role.
The other thing i can't get my head around is that the Op's friend must have not been asked their current salary by the new potential employer. If during interview the interviewer asked to which he replied 28.5k then an offer of between 24/7k would surely not have been offered. I've been asked what my current salary is [at interview] by my last 3 employers in the past 7 years, as clearly it gives them a guide. If the OP's friend is concerned about this low offer, yet not having divulged this crucial information then he is barking up the wrong tree.

I think maybe the new potential employer has twigged that candidates lie about their current salary more than guys lie about how many women they're slept with LOL
  • I just accepted a role paying £8k less than advertised. This was my decision as I didnt have all the experience necessary but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Sometimes the Hirer will look at someone and decide they want them, but that they arent necessarily worth the 'full' salary offered. My new company have built in a 6 month payrise with some targets built in.

Sometimes people need to check out the bigger picture, rather than look at what salary they get when they walk through the door on day 1

But you know you will be better off in 6 months time, not everybody is given that assurance.

And without that assurance why would anybody take on a lower paid role if that meant they couldn't meet their monthly mortgage payments, yet are able to on their higher current role wage?

    Think you are misunderstanding.

I havent taken a pay cut, I have received a 30% payrise to take this job, I just didnt get it at the advertised salary due to me being short in experience in a few areas.
