Zero hour contract

My 18 yr old daughter has just got a job after being on JSA for weeks. She has signed off JSA and is positive about working hard and earning a living and contributing.
However she has been employed on a casual basis. They have told her she therefore won't get a contract - I thought she would at least be entitled to a statement of employment. Does anybody know if she should get anything in writing?
She has been given 5 x 8 hour shifts for the first week and they have said she should get quite a few hours but where does she stand if the hours suddenly disappear? As I believe after Christmas the seasonal demand will dry up and she could spend a few months not earning anything.
One last point is that she was given a blouse as part of uniform but as the shifts can be 3pm to 11pm one day and then 7am to 3pm the next day she won't have time to launder it between shifts. If she requires another blouse she has to pay £5 for it - would this mean she can keep it when she leaves? Without anything in writing it's hard to see whether the company will require her to return the uniform.
Any advice on contract in writing and obligations would be grateful.

Yes she is entitled to a statement of her main terms and conditions of employment within two months of commencing employment.
If she is on a zero hours contract then there is no obligation for the employer to provide work, and no obligation for the employee to take work offered.
Can't say about the blouse - any rules there will be specific to that employer, and you will need to ask them.0 -
Wouldn't that fall foul of the daily breaks specified by the working time directive?3pm to 11pm one day and then 7am to 3pm the next day
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/WorkingHoursAndTimeOff/DG_10029451 which states:Daily rest - a break between working days
If you are an adult worker you have the right to a break of at least 11 hours between working days. This means as an adult worker, if you finish work at 8.00 pm on Monday you should not start work until 7.00 am on Tuesday.0 -

Thank you for that - I thought it was 8 hours between shifts which still cuts it fine but workplace is very close by so no travelling time to speak of.
I see it states exceptions which includes tourism and she works in a hotel so the usual rules probably don't apply.
Besides which she is on a casual contract so she's hardly going to rock the boat!0
