Help-fines/bailiffs

Hi newbie in urgent need of advice!
I have an old magistrates court fine outstanding of £2200((
Have recently been contacted by bailiffs making all the usual threats. I have written to them asking for installments which they replied to with a minimum monthly payment of £540-cannot pay this obviously im not a premiership footballer! Tried the original court they have written back saying i have to deal with the bailiffs only not them.
Any advice?I am working but have loads of debts-obviously this is priority -any advice most welcome,i am stressed to the max and terrified whenever the phone or doorbell rings(

    Hi

Have you worked out how much you can afford to pay a month? I would write to the bailiffs with an offer to pay that each month (maybe enclose the 1st month's payment with your letter), then ask for their bank details so you can set up a standing order for that amount each month. Best to send the letter recorded delivery.

Presumably they've never been in your house? they may try to tell you that they'll only agree to a repayment plan if you agree to sign a walking possession order - don't agree to, just keep making the monthly payments to them and keep them out of your house.

Also have you checked how much they've charged you in fees so far? and checked if all the charges are legal? its not uncommon for bailiffs to charge excessive illegal fees.
