If both cars were pushed in empty, the bill would not be £200.
He has two choices, put up with it and hope its less next month or make a stand, claim the money back and start looking for a new job.
A transit van and a large 4wd would easily take more than £200 of fuel between them for example. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Depends what car you're driving. I have a Jeep Cherokee with a 20 gallon tank; which is about 90litres. I used to have a Volvo with a 70 litre tank.
90 * 1.29 = £116.10
70 * 1.29 = £90.30
not all cars have 50 litre tanks.0 -

As he's been working and getting paid he'll have a contract, albeit a verbal one. although a contract will have bugger all effect in this case as a contract is an agreement between two parties. If there is a company policy that says "all staff must make up any shortage in the till" then it doesn't matter if it doesn't say it in a contract.
what he should be doing is trying to get the petrol station to invest in CCTV to stop people stealing.0 -
If there is no contract of employment then the T/C's will be implied. If they were mine I would not expect any illegal deductions from wages, I would raise a formal grievance. I know the job is needed and this may cause strain, but what happends when all of these people come back and then the wages = 0.00. That's the day that it has gone too far and then the indidvidual will not even be able to live, this then becomes a desperate situation. Why let this happen, I would honestly look for another job and then leave and raise a formal claim, why not join the union and next time it happends ask them to bring the point to the employer.
I also agree with most of the posts on here!0 -
If the theft is reported and is proved to have been a theft, then you should not have to balance the till. So if all of the money were to go missing from the till what would happen, would all staff loose pay? and would this be reported to the Police, if so then we can clearly see there is a problem with the system and the employer to be reasonable, all incidents should be reported to the Police at least for the sake of the employee that has lost soo much!.0
