Disappointed with quality of lamb bought from supermarket

Had a delivery from the blue and white van at the weekend which included some diced lamb (2 x 300g packs) and a Simply Roast Lamb Shoulder Joint with rosemary and mint crust.

The diced lamb went in a curry and the shoulder joint was cooked yesterday.

I am really disappointed because the lamb curry (which I ate half of today) was full of fatty lamb pieces and i have absolutely no appetite for the portion thats left waiting to be reheated in the fridge.

The lamb shoulder joint was also a real disappointment - supposedly serves 3 - umm no, didn't even serve me (one person). lots of fat on this also and not possible to eat rosemary/mint crust because lots and lots of fat underneath.

I know lamb can be fatty but I was particularly surprised that the diced lamb was of such poor quality. won't be buying any more lamb in a hurry.

My experience with Supermarket meat is that the Co Op is usually better than Mr T
  • I had lovely half leg of lamb from sainsbury's, got it reduced and frooze it that night as had other dinner, defrosted it on friday and it did take a bit of carefull trimming to get all meat away from the fat but the fat must only have been about 100g if that out of 1.25 kg obviously the bone would weigh a bit too

was about the best lamb curry I have ever had, was so tender and better than any curry I even have had out at decent indians.
  • Supermarket meat can be hit an miss I find, I've had some amazing steaks from Tesco and some blooming awful ones, guess I should learn my lesson and only use my butcher in future!

I'm a bit confused though, if the lamb looked fatty in the packet, why did you not trim it before you used it OR cooked it slowly for a long time so the fat rendered down into the curry?

I've had meat that I'm unhappy with purchased from supermarkets in the past. I've usually kept receipts having made most purchases on credit card. I keep packaging from unstatisfactory meat and send it into head office. If they don't know there's a problem they can't look into it. They usually will send a voucher for the equivalent price. I now don't buy stir fry beef strips from Sainsbury's after having 2 lots purchased at different times taste chewy. Was not a good meal on either occasion
    The end is nigh

lamb fat is supposed to add to the taste..hopefully it wasn't all fat mind!
  • buy direct from suppliers (just google) I recently paid £100 for a whole organic lamb, butchered to my requirements and delivered (would have been £80 if I had collected) Beautiful meat, properly raised and hung correctly.

I had two packs of diced lamb and although there were some fatty bits which I picked out, it wasn't immediately obviously that there were lots more fatty bits that I had missed!

Shoulder of lamb is the most fatty joint - one of the reasons I like it! If you want lean, you really have to go for leg.
Don't know much about Tesco's meat as we don't have one near me, but I've given up buying meat from Sainsbury's, due to the lack of quality. I find that Waitrose & M&S are the best, but I've heard that Morrison is good for meat too.
But probably best to go to a butcher.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I had a joint and there was so much fat in it, I couldn't believe it. It wasn't a cheap joint either. I put all the fat in the wrapper the meat came in and took it back to Sainsburys. They gave me a refund and a £5 voucher. I think I was feeling brave that day!
  • We no longer buy meat from the Supermarket, initially because we were disgusted by the taste and look of it and now because I am more concerned about animal welfare and against factory farming, that aside, I am always horrified at the look of the meat and poultry in the supermarkets and the state of the fridges. My best recommendation would be to get to know your local butcher or farm shop owners. I eat red meat perhaps twice a month now and chicken perhaps 3 times a month but have a great relationship with our local butcher who only gives us the best quality meat direct from the farm.

I'd rather go without than buy from Mr T's or Asda in particular round here! At a push I'd use Sainsbury and I do like the chicken from Aldi as you can get free range for considerably cheaper than the main supermarkets.

Sorry for your disappointment, I know what it's like to look forward to a meal then not able to face it due to poor quality meat!
