Childcare for Over 12s? Does it Exist?

  • It was my understanding that children over the age of 8 were supernumery when it came to a childminders numbers, and providing he was well behaved would have thought they'd be greatful for the extra dosh. My 9 year old (not the same I know) comes and goes at the childminders at the moment and she doesn't mind, nice money that she can take or leave.

Would you really have 10 different inset days? Have the schools sent out a list of them up to the end of the academic year? Mine are at Junior and Secondary and there's 1 day each that doesn't match up. Otherwise they are all the same. DS has an extra day at Easter, DD has a 'random' Friday in June. Maybe your answer is to look for part time work rather than f-time work, so it limits how many days/hours youa re out of the house till the kids are older.

Yes, I really do have 10 different inset days! Not 1 date is the same  but it does make working just that little bit harder. Ideally I'd prefer p/t but I'm limited to what I could do due to a disability, so I applied for this particular post for the guaranteed interview.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

That is interesting - different childminders have told me different things, but I guess they all have their own preferences regarding which age groups they prefer to mind. Not heard about any age being supernumery from those I've approached. I'll clarify the numbers allowed with the council advisor. Thanks.

This is what my local council advisor has explained & now I can understand why different childminders have told me different things.

Not sure if I'd want 8 under 6 & 2 extras all at once in my house either :rotfl:

Childminders are only registered for children under the age of 8 and the maximum number they can have under 8 is 6. This includes any of their own children. Some childminders are registered for less than 6 children. They can take older children as long as it does not affect the level of care given to those children under 8. Therefore children over the age of 8 are ‘supernumery’.

It may be that the childminder you asked already has her full quota of under 8’s and feels that having too many children in her house would be too much for the younger children.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...
